HHN5 Review

My personal favourite haunted house is the True Singapore Ghost Stories: The MRT follow by SG Blk 50. Perhaps it is the familiarity of the uniquely Singapore creepy ghost stories and the eerie places.

Hell House is not really scary but it has a beautiful setup. Some visitors might find these paper effigies and paper items creepy. Tunnel People is the first dark house in HHN Singapore. It will be scary for those who are afraid of the dark and those who dislike enclosed space. You will be walking through the maze-like tunnel with almost no light.

I personally quite like the Hungry Ghosts and conTERMINATED scare zone. Hungry Ghosts featuring asian kind of ghosts and zombies. conTERMINATED featuring angmo kind of mutants and horror like those in the thriller movies. Sci-fi theme The Invaders does not have any scare factor for me. Tall big aliens look intimidating but because the movement is slow (due to the stilt), doesn’t feel aggressive. It is cool to take photos with them though.

Overall the props and settings are realistic. The scare actors are very professional, scary and funny.

We spent about 2 hours to complete 4 haunted houses and 3 scare zones. This is without any queue at the haunted houses. We strongly recommend you to get an express pass if you want to have an enjoyable experience with less waiting in the queue. If you want to experience the shiokness of VIP access to the haunted houses and priority photo opportunity with the scare actors, get the RIP Tour. It is also an unlimited express pass to all open attractions for that day after the guided tour ends.

Although the 3D section is not as huge as USS Halloween Horror Nights 4, you can have a feel of the 3D horror. It is really not bad for a limited space haunted house to have quite a few themes inside. The Medical Laboratory, Cabin in the Woods, The Living Dead, The Creepy Fun House Maze, Into Darkness Maze and Revenge of the Doll. If you haven’t been to any haunted house yet, you should try Museum Of Horrors @ SCAPE. The price is affordable. You can get 25% discount off standard ticket with discount code from some bloggers. After registration, we were ushered into the Pantages Hollywood at around 8pm. Shortly after, Jack the Clown and his hideous circus crew showed up. Jack has opened auditions in search of new stars for his nightmare circus. However, despite equipping with amazing talents from the auditionees, they did not manage to live the next day. The narcissistic Jack is still unable to find another performing artist better than him.

After the stage show ended, we were split into small groups and each lead by a few professional guides. Our group first went to the Jack’s 3-Dementia, first ever 3D haunted house in Singapore. Followed by Jing’s Revenge, MATI Camp and The L.A.B. The event ended at around 11pm with refreshments at the Discovery Food Court.

HHN4 Review

USS Halloween Horror Nights, as always, the costumes, props and effects are professionally planned. There are alot more scare actors around the scare zones and in the haunted houses compare to last year.

My personal favourite haunted house is the MATI Camp follow by Jing’s Revenge. Somehow, haunted army and school theme never fail to make people’s hair stands.

The alien theme The L.A.B does not have much scare factor for us, probably because we are too accustom to the sci-fi world, unless the aliens and monsters are trying to chase after and eat you alive.

This year HHN4, USS introduce Singapore’s first 3D haunted house, Jack’s 3-Dementia. Scare factor is low too but it is pretty interesting walking around the fun house with a 3D glasses looking at luminous dazzling picture walls and decor coming to life, twisting your mind. However, if you have coulrophobia (fear of clowns), this is not the place you would like to stay, as the evil clowns will not spare pranking at you.

For scare zone, my personal favourite is the Scary Tales. You can see familiar characters like Rapunzel with her super long hair that is used to cocoon the next unaware victim, Little Red Riding Hood who will chase after wolves and YOU, Mermaid that is being hanged and more. These twisted characters are probably the creations of the Scribes of Scare which you will encountered at the entrance of the Scary Tales.

Jack’s Nightmare Circus at Pantages Hollywood is a show that you do not want to miss. It is entertaining with music and dance, extreme stunts by the audition participants and Jack’s horrific humor.

We spent about 3 hours to complete all the 4 haunted houses, 4 scare zones and a 45 minutes stage show. This is without queuing for more than 5 minutes at the haunted houses. We strongly recommend you to get an express pass if you want to have an enjoyable experience with less waiting in the queue. Or get the frequent fear pass and come back a few times to slowly complete the whole HHN4. If you have deep pocket, get the RIP Tour and experience the shiokness of VIP access to the haunted houses, priority photo opportunity with the scare actors and an unlimited express pass to all open attractions for that day after the guided tour ends.

2014 USS Halloween Horror Nights 4 Inauguration

The Mysterious Box

On one boring afternoon, #HalloweenSG received a mysterious box with a lock.

We need to “unlock the darkness” with the accompanied key to access the dark content in the box. It was an invitation to the good man Jonah Goodwill’s Inauguration on 24th July 2014 at Universal Studios Singapore for successfully elected as Minister. YESSS! Goodwill Reigns and Democracy Rules! But … we were wondering why DEMONcracy was printed on the box. It MUST be a typo.

The votes are so transparent. Seems like 100% of the people voted Goodwill.

Halloween Horror Nights 4 Preview

This October 2014, the 4th Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Singapore will deliver 13 nights of horror, 4 scare zones, 4 haunted houses and 444 minions of the Evil Minister to terrorize you.

Scare Zones

Scary Tales – At Lost World zone, characters from fairytales have been twisted. There is no happily ever after.

Canyon Of The Cursed – At Ancient Egypt zone, you are brought back to 1864, a frontier town in Texas where undead zombies, horses, American Indians lurking.

Demoncracy – Minions of the Demon will crawl out from a giant crack in New York street.

Bogeyman – Bogeyman and demonic children will haunt you in Sting Alley/Water Street.

Jack’s 3-Dementia – Coulrophobia strikes as guests enter the world of a loony killer clown. This will be Singapore’s first 3D haunted house. With 3D glasses on, guests will be transported into a psychedelic experience.

Jack’s Nightmare Circus – A new live show will be debuting at Pantages Hollywood Theater for the period of Halloween. Jack’s Nightmare Circus will feature aerial acrobats, contortionists and other freaky friends of Jack.

2013 USS Halloween Horror Nights 3 RIP Tour Review

On the first night of USS Halloween Horror Nights 3, 11th Oct 2013 (Friday), with my fearless friend, we joined the 7.30pm RIP Tour. I won’t be covering too much of the haunted houses and scare zones. I will just share my personal experience for the HHN3 RIP Tour.

Entitlements for RIP Tour:

– ONE (1) Halloween Horror Nights 3 ticket pass.
– ONE (1) Universal Express Unlimited pass.
– ONE (1) RIP tour credential, lanyard and glow stick.
– VIP access to all haunted houses, scare zones and selected rides.
– Complimentary refreshments at the VIP reception.
– ONE (1) $10 meal voucher for use at any F&B carts/outlets in USS.
– Opportunity for a private meet and greet and photo session with the characters.

We reached USS area at around 6.45pm. There were people paying for face painting by professionals ($10 for quarter-face, $20 for half-face), people taking photos, people buying “blood” drinks from the blood angels who were pushing their grisly goods around boldly, and a mass crowd waiting at the gate eager to rush in to experience the horrific scares.

At 7.00pm, we went to the VIP reception. As there is a 7.00pm RIP Tour group in the lounge, we came back at around 7.20pm and we were invited into the VIP lounge to wait for the tour to start. Each tour group departs every half an hour starting from 7pm.

We missed the opening scaremony of the 3 evil sisters (teleportation trick) as we were in the VIP lounge which was outside of USS. You can check out the HHN3 Opening Scaremony youtube video recorded by one of the visitors.

While waiting for the rest of our tour mates, a pale looking blood stained staff served us our complimentary drink. Both of us chose cranberry juice.

The time has come, all our tour mates arrived. Our group had a total of 6 people. Our personal pretty zombie guide distributed each of us a VIP pass with lanyard and a glow stick. Only VIP will have a glow stick. Our zombie guide briefed us the instructions of the RIP tour, safety aspects and navigation around USS. This personal guided RIP tour will last for about 3 hours. We were told that the scare actors will never touch us and pleaded to us not to attack their wandering ghostly staffs.

The Guided Tour

In less than 2 hours, we completed all 3 haunted houses (Adrift, Songs of Death, Possessions) and the 3 scare zones (Attack of the Vampires, Convention of Curses, Possessions). Before each of the haunted house and scare zone, our guide explained to us the background story of each and attempted to spook us with a creepy voice. For the last 1 hour, we took some of the exciting rides like Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers 3D Battle, Enchanted Airways, Canopy Flyer and ended with Monster Rock Halloween Edition at 10pm.

VIP Access

At each haunted house, there is a special route for the VIP to an exclusive VIP entrance of the haunted house. We do not need to queue unless another RIP group is there, which is rare. Waiting time is usually 0 minute while the average waiting time for the normal queue is about 60 minutes and express queue about 15 minutes. For other normal rides, such as Transformers 3D, Revenge of the Mummy, our guide leaded us in from the ride’s exit direct to the front of the queue.

At the haunted attractions, whenever you walked past the frustratingly long normal queue and cut to the front of the express queue (which was still quite long), the feeling of having VIP access was indescribable. At any point of time during the 3 hours RIP tour, if you want to take any rides or go for another haunted house again, let the guide know and they will bring you in again. You will have unlimited VIP access to any rides and haunted houses during the guided tour.

Unlimited Express

Normal Express Pass has only one time per attraction priority access to the 3 haunted houses and all USS attractions. After the 3-hour RIP tour, the RIP VIP pass becomes an unlimited express pass to all the attractions (except Canopy Flyer).

Our 3-hour tour ended, our personal guide left. Me and my fearless friend decided to go for the Mummy’s ride since it’s the next most exciting ride after Battle Galactica (which was not in operation). We flashed our VIP pass and tried to enter the express queue but the gatekeeper denied our entry. She said our “express” pass can only enter attraction once and asked us to go join the normal queue. We emphasized that this was a RIP Tour VIP pass which is an unlimited express pass. Another gatekeeper came, said the same thing and both of them refused our entry to the express queue.

We were heated, walked all the way back to the guest services at the entrance and clarified the issue. The customer service guy quickly double checked the entitlement with their higher level management and confirmed the RIP VIP pass is indeed an unlimited express pass. He apologized to us and comm to all ride station managers and make sure all gatekeepers get the message.

Wasted 30 minutes of our horrifying time to the guest services and back to the Mummy’s ride entrance, the gatekeeper immediately allowed us to join the express queue. For those who are joining the HHN3 RIP Tour for the next 9 days, after we “waked up their idea”, you will not suffer embarrassing moments like us being denied express queue entry with a supposedly distinguished VIP pass.

Photo Session

Like the other attractions, we had priority photo taking session with the 3 sisters at the main stage. At the scare zones and anywhere, if you want to take any photos with any spooky characters, just inform your guide and they will bring them to greet you. If your picture is taken by USS, you can get the photo prints at one-for-one promotion.

At around 12.30am, feeling hungry, realized we still have our $10 meal voucher, we went to the Mel’s Drive-In for supper. I ordered the special Halloween combo (Chicken Tikka Burger, Fries, Soft drink and a Dessert – $15.80). After 10% and $10 off, I paid less than $5 for the meal.

When: 24 August 2013
Time: 10am – 6pm

The Job

As a Halloween Horror Nights 3 scare-actor, you will:

– Perform in scare mazes and scare zones.
– Wear character costumes.
– Wear masks or theatrical make-up.
– Work through each event night in an energy-demanding role.

Who does it take?

To be a scare-actor at Halloween Horror Nights 3, you must be willing to act and able to take direction. We are looking for individuals who are talented, versatile and enthusiastic.

You should also be in good physical health given scare mazes are physically demanding spaces to work in. You will find need for good stamina and endurance.

In addition, do consider the following before coming to audition:

– Are you afraid of the dark?
– Does the sight of blood (realistic paint, not real) affect you?
– Do you suffer from claustrophobia?

Experience in acting or scare-acting is a bonus but absolutely not a necessity. Paid training and rehearsal time will be provided.
